How Do You Earth or Ground Yourself?

Yes CBD is scientifically shown to lower anxiety and many people swear by its benefits too. Cannabinoid also helps to reduce a wide range of related negative psychological symptoms adding to the

Electricity is everywhere, we need it in our body too which is why its impact on your brain and body is rarely – if ever – considered, but the effect is significant.

More and more research is being done on how ‘grounding’ or ‘earthing’ can help you to boost energy and protect you from harmful electromagnetic frequencies.

How Do You Earth or Ground Yourself? Grounding and earthing can be done easily, by connecting with nature through any part of the naked body, for example walking in bare feet, holding on to a tree or using grounding and earthing products like a grounding mat on the floor, at a desk or in bed. There are even grounding shoes.

Skeptics are numerous, but studies are being published which show that ‘grounding’ can help to reduce inflammation, eliminate diseases and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

And doing it is a free or very low-cost biohacking and you can use multiple grounding and earthing methods simultaneously.

What is grounding?

Feeling ‘connected’ to the Earth, feeling comfortable, safe and sound is being grounded.

Stress or anxieties which impact you can be helped and maybe even eliminated by earthing and grounding.

This, in turn, can help to increase your energy, calm you and improve performance.

The world around us is constantly in emitting electrical and magnetic fields or currents. This can disrupt our rhythm.

Studies have shown that sunflower seeds which were grounded – in the Earth – compared to those which were not had significantly more benefits from not becoming ‘stressed’ by being separated from the Earth.

The same principles can be applied (known as Earthing – a branch of grounding) to us too, with studies also backing the benefits in those who are more ‘grounded’.

When we come into contact with the ground, the Earth our bodies and its molecules receive a boost. This boost can help with poor sleep, anxiety, stress, and depression and it’s something animals benefit form all the time.

Yet we’ve insulated ourselves and therefore not benefited from this.

Another thing to consider is grounding items around you too, as this will directly improve the electromagnetic fields in your environment.

In fact, I’m sure you’ve got a static electricity shock for touching something before, like a TV, a car door or even some carpet, which just shows how much electricity can be stored and discharged from objects we come in to contact with all the time.

Benefits of grounding

A vast array of supposed benefits come from practicing grounding.

The following are all benefits of earthing or grounding yourself:

  • Anxiety
  • Cardiovascular disease – specifically hypertension (from reduced blood pressure)
  • Clear your mind
  • Depression
  • Encourage recovery and healing
  • Improves mood
  • Improving sleep
  • Increases energy levels
  • Reducing/eliminating chronic pain
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Reduce jet lag
  • Relieve headaches

How to ground yourself

There are a variety of ways in which you can attempt to ground yourself, try some of the following and see what works best for you.

Additional products can also be used, but we’ll get onto those in the next section.

Walk Barefoot

Doing so will reconnect you to the Earth. Feel the grass or stone on your feet, you will feel the benefits of grounding whilst also spending time away from your phone and breathing fresh air.

Roll or Lay On the Floor

This technique works much the same as walking barefoot. Being in contact with the Earth is crucial, rolling around will expel stress and provide a satisfying, calming effect.

Stand Still

Once more, having contact with the Earth through being barefoot, standing still and thinking for a moment can help to ground you. It is actually a form of Chinese meditation called Zhan Zhuang.

Stand, breathe, think everything through and ground yourself.

You can also do this lying down, just appreciate everything and think your situation through whilst connecting with the Earth.

Grounding and earthing is also possible when meditating.

Submerge Yourself In Water

Coldwater can provide a soothing shock to the body.

Simply putting your hands under a cold bowl or sink of water can make you feel more grounded.

And if you want to increase the effects, cold water can have additional benefits too.

Breathe Slowly and Deeper

The Navy Seals use breathing techniques to calm themselves and ground themselves.

‘Breathe in, breathe out’ is often advised to people who are wound up as it helps to ground them. Inhale deeply for five seconds.

Then hold that breath for 10 seconds.

After, breathe out for another five seconds.

This works even better with fresh air.

Conscious Awareness

Stand or sit and simply observe.

Listen to sounds, watch the trees sway in the wind, take notice of things you normally wouldn’t and recite them out loud.

Doing this helps you ground, it also makes you live in the moment which is highly beneficial for your mind, as life is all too often too confused and chaotic.

Music and Soothing Natural Sounds

Music and certain sounds can calm and ground as it takes you away and can shut everything else off, meaning you can take time to yourself and your own thoughts.

Observing sounds in nature can do the same.

Products which can help with grounding

The following products are available and can all assist in grounding and earthing yourself more effectively:

  • Bedsheets
  • Shoes
  • Socks
  • Patches
  • Desk mats
  • Floor mats
  • Wrist bands
  • Body bands
  • Grounding rod

As we are surrounded by electricity from computers and technology, using these grounding methods are a sensible and easy health hack, in fact, I ground things like my computer screen and TV.

Risks of grounding and earthing

The techniques suggested above are all safe to perform if done sensibly. And the more you use them the greater the benefit to you there will be.

The only risks of grounding can come from using mats and rods which can increase the chances of electrocution if used incorrectly, so ensure that you read the labels and warnings surrounding these products before using them.

Conclusion

Grounding and earthing can help to relieve tension, stress and provide a number of other benefits.

It is easily performed and inexpensive, especially if you don’t use any of the equipment listed here.

Earthing and grounding have probably not been studied as much as it should have, however, small but very reliable studies which have been done suggested very promising results, which is why it’s a great biohack with multiple potential benefits.
